Frequently asked questions

A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your cryptocurrency private keys offline, providing the highest level of security. Unlike software wallets on your computer or phone, hardware wallets keep your keys completely isolated from internet-connected devices, making them immune to hacking, malware, and online threats. Ledger hardware wallets use a secure element chip (the same technology found in credit cards and passports) to generate and store your private keys, ensuring they never leave the device.

Setting up your Ledger device is straightforward and takes about 15-20 minutes. First, download the official Ledger Live app on your computer or mobile device. Connect your Ledger device via USB or Bluetooth, then follow the on-screen instructions to initialize the device. You'll create a secure PIN (4-8 digits), and the device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. Write down this recovery phrase on the provided Recovery Sheet and store it safely - this is your backup to recover your crypto if your device is lost or damaged. Finally, install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage.

If you lose your device or forget your PIN, don't panic - your cryptocurrencies are safe as long as you have your 24-word recovery phrase. You can purchase a new Ledger device and restore your accounts using the recovery phrase. If you forget your PIN, after 3 incorrect attempts, the device will automatically reset for security. You can then restore it using your recovery phrase. This is why it's crucial to keep your recovery phrase secure and never share it with anyone. Without the recovery phrase, your funds cannot be recovered.

Yes, you can buy cryptocurrency directly through Ledger Live using our integrated partners. We work with trusted providers like Coinify, MoonPay, and Banxa to offer secure on-ramp services. You can purchase crypto with a credit card, bank transfer, or other payment methods, and the cryptocurrency is sent directly to your Ledger hardware wallet. This eliminates the need to buy crypto on exchanges and then transfer it to your wallet, reducing both fees and security risks. All purchases are subject to KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements.

Ledger hardware wallets support over 5,500 cryptocurrencies and tokens, including all major assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and their associated tokens. We support Layer 1 blockchains, Layer 2 solutions, DeFi tokens, NFTs, stablecoins, and emerging cryptocurrencies. New assets are regularly added through app updates. Each cryptocurrency requires its own app to be installed on your device through Ledger Live's Manager. Popular supported assets include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Coin, Cardano, Solana, Polygon, Chainlink, and thousands more.

Ledger Live is completely safe and specifically designed to work with your hardware wallet. The app itself never has access to your private keys - they remain securely stored on your Ledger device. When you want to send cryptocurrency, Ledger Live prepares the transaction and sends it to your hardware wallet for cryptographic signing. You must physically confirm each transaction on your device's screen and press buttons to approve it. This ensures that even if your computer is compromised, your funds remain secure because all critical operations happen within the hardware wallet's secure environment.
